Prevention and treatment of nail fungus - effective folk and pharmaceutical remedies

Anyone who is familiar with a fungal infection knows how many problems this disease brings. In summer it is not possible to wear sandals, and at home you have to shyly hide your feet in socks. In addition to aesthetic problems, onychomycosis also causes physical problems, which is why it is important to “stop” the disease early on.

The list of places where you can be infected by a fungus is endless, so we list those where the risk of contracting a fungus is greatest:

Healthy feet and nails
  • At home, when using manicure accessories “with the whole family”(a pair of scissors or tweezers for everyone, for example).
  • In the beauty salon(and at home) during a manicure/pedicure session, nail extensions, etc.subject to insufficient quality of tool processing.
  • In the pool- when walking barefoot near the pool or in public showers.
  • In public baths, saunas, gyms.
  • When using shared towels.
  • When using a matto the bathroom “with the whole family”.
  • When wearing tight or low-quality shoes.
  • In spa salons, fitness centers.
  • When “changing” shoes(one friend lets another use them, or guests receive slippers from someone in the family to use).
  • If you frequently wear synthetic fiber socks/tights.
  • With frequent contact (and subsequent injury to the nail plates) with household chemicals.
  • When taking oral contraceptivesor antibiotics.

What treatment can a doctor prescribe - the most effective medications

As soon as you notice signs of incipient ringworm, you should see a dermatologist or mycologist.

The specialist determines the type of fungus and, based on research, prescribes treatment. An examination, tests, scraping of tissue for examination, assessment of nail thickness/structure and determination of the type of fungus are usually sufficient.

What is the treatment?

  1. In the initial phaseSometimes it is enough to apply antifungal varnish and cut off the parts of the nails affected by the fungus.
  2. With local treatmentuse conventional antifungal medications (from ointments and patches to solutions and varnishes), usually twice a day.
  3. The medicine is applied to the nails only after treating the feet.First, soften your nails/skin in a warm soapy soda solution. Then, apply the medicine for the prescribed time.Next - hygiene procedures again.
  4. How long to treat? It depends on the stage of the disease. You won't be able to deal with a fungus like you would a runny nose.Treatment will take a long time - be patient. As a rule, this process takes from 2 months to 1 year.
  5. If local treatment is ineffectivethe specialist prescribes general antimycotics (orally). But only after a special examination and in the absence of contraindications. They are also not combined with other medicines/drugs.Contraindications: breastfeeding and, of course, pregnancy, as well as the use of hormonal contraceptives, kidney/liver diseases.
  6. Related actions.During the treatment process, you must treat all shoes (as well as socks, etc.) with a special solution prescribed by your doctor.
  7. At the end of treatment(i.e. when healthy nails grow), control tests will be carried out.The results will show whether the treatment was effective or whether dermatophytes are still present.

Notice:Nail fungus is an extremely tenacious “infection”.Furthermore, it is known for its high resistance to antifungals.Thereforethe disease must be cured completely, otherwise the effect will be extremely low during repeated treatment.

And, of course, you shouldn't self-medicate.All medicines are used exclusively as prescribed by a specialist!

You can protect yourself from fungus simply by following hygiene rules and timely preventive measures.

  • In all public places (beaches, baths, baths, swimming pools, spas, etc.) we wear easy-to-clean flip-flops.Do not walk barefoot where there is a risk of getting an infection!
  • We don't wear other people's shoes (including flip-flops when visiting – it's better to wear socks).
  • We do not use other people's towels or manicure accessories.
  • Leaving the bathroom, we put our feet not on the common rug (and often wet, not the first freshness), but on our own towel (we allocated it in advance for such purposes).
  • nail polish for nail fungus

  • We regularly treat the inside of our shoes with antiseptics.
  • To prevent our feet from sweating, we use deodorants, talcum powder, etc.
  • We only use cotton socks. If you need to wear tights/stockings (products made from nylon and other synthetic fabrics) at home, be sure to remove them, steam your legs and treat them.
  • In hot weather, we wear open shoes for ventilation and free air exchange.Sweaty feet are a breeding ground for bacteria.
  • We don’t try on shoes in stores without socks – barefoot.
  • We dry our feet after bathing, including the spaces between our toes - this is where the fungus starts.
  • We avoid cracks in our feet - we use moisturizing creams.
  • Wash my feet with mild antibacterial soap.
